Need to prove to Wal-Mart you’re cutting GHGs?

Scrambling to find ways to prove to your customers, like say Wal-Mart, that you’re greening your product lines?

Consider replacing your corporate sedans, pickups and vans with clean vehicles.

The switch to clean or green vehicles, i.e., alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), can generate significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, which is one thing Wal-Mart is expecting from its 100,000 suppliers. Click here for Wal-Mart’s green labeling plan.

Also, a recent report reveals that companies are cutting fuel costs by an average 4% a year by focusing on green fleet programs. Click here for details. For example, AT&T is investing in AFVs as part of its strategy to reduce GHG emissions and reduce fuel costs by improving mileage. It’s counting on a 25% reduction in GHG releases, thanks to its use of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.

So is the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). It just announced plans to add 6,500 AFVs to its delivery fleet. The service has experimented, sometimes successfully, with CNG- and electric-powered trucks and vans. The USPS has experimented less successfully with flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), run on ethanol, due to lack of refueling infrastructure.

In this new phase, the USPS will add a mix of electric hybrids, more FFVs and four-cylinder vehicles that get better gas mileage than their predecessors.

It’s part of the Obama administration’s larger plan to add 17,600 AFVs and energy-efficient vehicles to the federal fleet. The government is only purchasing these vehicles from Ford, Chrysler and General Motors.

Under the General Services Administration’s plan, federal employees will be driving a mix of AFVs. GSA is also buying fuel-efficient gasoline and diesel vehicles if they get at least 10% better mileage than their replacements.

The goal is to reduce or prevent 26 million pounds a year of GHG emissions released by federal vehicles.

One Response to “Need to prove to Wal-Mart you’re cutting GHGs?”

  1. Pam Says:

Why would Walmart care who is going green? Last year in Colorado (probably everywhere), after the big school supply rush was over, Walmart threw out dumpsters full of brand new school supplies (ie. pencils, pencil boxes, paper and lots more), not just a few, but full dumpsters. If Walmart gave a hoot about “going green” they would have donated the supplies to kids who can’t afford to buy supplies of their own. The schools know who these kids are and can distribute them accordingly. You want to go green? start giving fines to companies like this who put brand new supplies in the landfill instead of getting them to people in need! What a waste!
