Small steps today can cut summer AC bill

This year, instead of just singing “Summertime and the living is easy,” take some basic proactive steps now. By summer’s end your song will be, “Summertime, there’s no strain on ma’ wallet.”

With energy prices starting to climb again, it’s a good time to focus on energy efficiencies. And, the good news is that taming your cooling bills in the summer does not require big investments in new equipment, software or fancy controls.

The secret is basic maintenance. EPA just published some reminders on how businesses can control their electric bills and improve their environmental footprint at the same time. Remember, when you cut your electric bill, you’re also cutting air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

To get your company and employees to go green this summer, EPA recommends:

  1. using programmable thermostats so you don’t waste money cooling the building after hours when nobody’s working
  2. making sure managers are using facility controls properly, and
  3. inspecting and maintaining cooling system equipment because cooling and ventilation accounts for 20% of your electric bill in the summer.

And, if you do decide to buy new equipment, such as printers, fax machines, computers, shop for Energy Star qualified products.

  1. Roland Ratliff Says:

Yes, a/c maintenance is paramount to energy efficiency. But, there is also another way to gain another 15% or more for a simple, yet effective system.

The one company I found that produces the unit is called “AC Mister”. It’s a clever little device that attaches to the top of the condenser unit. The center is mounted on the center of the fan. When the fan comes on, there is a paddle that hangs out over the center of the blades.

When the blades spin, they lift the paddle, opening the valve on the unit which has three or more hoses with misters on the ends.

This unit is designed to cool the air coming in to the unit making it cycle faster and run more efficiently. I have experimented with a home-made unit and I must say, “I’m impressed”.

  2. solar power Says:

The thing holding that up is the ease with which people could generate their own power for residential use and render the power utilities obsolete except for the demands of industry. Some companies are even trying to own the panels on your roof so they can charge you for the free electricity coming out of them.
