Sprint tosses the dice on a green phone

Soon enough, we’ll find out if cell phone users want to buy green.

Sprint is revamping its retail stores to promote a new line of communications gear that’s literally and spiritually green. Each Sprint store will feature a green section to promote eco-friendly products. Sprint’s new green campaign will promote recycling, recycled content and environmental protection.

It’s all part of a larger campaign to promote its new cell phone, the Reclaim, which is made with 80% recycled content. Later models will achieve a 90% recycled content goal. It’s a shiny green, but it will also come in blue.

Packaging for the Reclaim, made by Samsung, will be made from 70% recycled materials and instead of printed instructions, the manual will be online, thus cutting back on paper needed, which in turn reduces release of greenhouse gases associated with paper making. The phone’s charger is also an eco-friendly innovation. It’s 12 times more efficient than normal rechargers and is Energy Star approved.

The company has also redesigned its phone to avoid use of many toxic materials that are normally associated with plastic products. The Reclaim’s plastic is made from corn-based materials. The phone doesn’t contain any polyvinyl chloride or phthalates and only a trace amount of fire retardant.

And, to appeal to the spiritual side of consumers, Sprint will donate $2 to the Nature Conservancy each time a shopper buys the $50 phone.

The Sprint story is here.

Um…how is donating money to an environmental group “spiritual”?

Because most of you greenies actually do have environmentalism as your religion? Yeah…that’s got to be it. Funny that you actually used the word “spiritual” instead of altruistic.

By the way, it’s fine that environmentalism and anti-capitalism is your religion. I just wish you guys would stop proselytizing so much and trying to ruin our lifestyle and economy due to your “spiritual” beliefs, instead of objective science.

    John,
The story is about a company trying to make a buck. Sprint sees a market opportunity and it’s going after it. What’s anti-capitalistic about that?

I’m with Tom. I am so sick and tired of folks complaining about EVERYTHING. It’s a freaking story about cell phones. Sprint is just getting on the band wagon trying to keep their company afloat – and I think that’s great.

    John,

I agree with you on the “spiritual” side of things…good point. I do, however, applaud efforts of anyone to use recycled material, etc. A throwaway society is wasteful and doesn’t make commom sense. Probably why I have more stuff in my house that I don’t need than stuff I do need! lol…just because we live in a land of plenty doesn’t mean we have to be wasteful. And I don’t mind people being innovative, etc. to do things like this, we just don’t need the government forcing us to do things and taxing the crap out of if we don’t…or taxing us on things we really do need, like energy to heat our homes and run our businesses.
