Suppliers needed for federal green building spending

Green buildings get a billion-dollar push this year from the federal government. This should give a big lift to businesses and contractors who can supply green designs, technology and labor. The buyer’s basic goal: cutting energy costs.
Up for grabs: $5.5 billion in stimulus spending by the Government Services Administration (GSA). Acting Administrator Paul Prouty and other GSA officials offered up initial details on the agency’s stimulus spending plans during a recent employee pep rally. Click here to view their presentations.
The bulk of this stimulus spending will convert federal buildings into high-performance green buildings. The payoff for GSA is to reduce energy costs and claim credit for cutting or avoiding greenhouse gas emissions related to electricity generation.
The biggest slice of this pie goes to Washington, DC. The agency plans to spend $1.2 billion there to upgrade all those federal buildings. But there are winners in all 50 states and territories. For example, Portland, OR, will get $149 million for three green building projects.
In Pennsylvania, Philadelphia will get three projects. But not every city gets a piece of this pie. There’s nothing for Pittsburgh, perhaps because the city’s already home to a multi-million earmark, requested by Rep. John Murtha, to prop up a rarely used airport, named in his honor.
