What makes a product green?

Sure, we kind of know what “organic” food is supposed to be. But what makes a product “green?”
The bedding supply industry is about to find out, and then we’ll all sleep a little better on it.
Turns out the bedding supply industry is trying to define which green terms apply to mattresses. The Specialtiy Sleep Association just signed up 14 new members who joined on the promise of helping mattress makers join the green revolution by helping define industry standards for what makes a mattress:
- green
- natural
- all-natural, and
- organic.
The manufacturers will create their own certification program, based on these terms, so consumers will know which mattresses are eco-friendly.
New members on the green standards team will include: Cargill Biobased Polyurethanes, Foamex LP, Latexco-US/Latexco West and Organic Mattresses, Inc. They’re all committed to the SSA Green Initiative to identify, define and standardize how manufacturers and retailers market green and natural sleep products.
For example, some standards will likely be based on Cargill’s use of BiOH soy-based raw ingredients used to make flexible foam in its furniture and bedding.
The association’s Web site is here.
